Mathematics, Associate of Science Degree in Science and Mathematics

Mathematics, an option of the Associate of Science degree program in Science and Mathematics, prepares students for transfer into the junior year of a baccalaureate degree program in mathematics, mathematics education or related areas such as statistics, actuarial science, computational biology, mathematical finance, etc.  This program is also recommended for those students interested in pursuing higher studies in physics and allied fields. Graduates have transferred to colleges across the country.

Graduates are able to:

  • understand and use the language and symbols of mathematics
  • apply the fundamental processes of differentiation and integration to phenomena involving change
  • utilize the concepts of mathematical modeling
  • employ logical reasoning in mathematical proof and problem-solving
  • understand the appropriate use of technology for problem-solving in such areas as calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete math
  • synthesize mathematical concepts, theories and applications so as to solve mathematical problems independently

 

Raritan Valley Community College Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degree programs are designed to comply with the New Jersey Community Colleges General Education Foundation which supports transfer of courses to NJ Public four-year colleges and universities.  Students who intend to transfer to a NJ college or university can further improve the transfer of courses by using the Recommended Transfer Program (RTP) feature in NJTransfer.org.

1 Select from the following two-semester lab science sequences: BIOL 101 General Biology I  and BIOL 102 General Biology II , CHEM 103 General Chemistry I  and CHEM 104 General Chemistry II PHYS 101 General Physics I  and PHYS 102 General Physics II , or PHYS 150 Analytical Physics I  and PHYS 151 Analytical Physics II .

2 If a foreign language is chosen, a two-semester sequence is required.  Placement by examination is required for students who wish to continue studying a language previously studied.  Students may not take courses below their placement level.  For more information, see Foreign Language Placement Testing & Degree Requirements .

3 Select a course from the appropriate category of the General Education  list. 

4 Choose from either CSIT 103 Computer Concepts and Programming  or CSIT 105 Foundations of Computer Science . 

5 Any college-level course.  Students are encouraged to take MATH 110 Statistics I  and MATH 111 Statistics II MATH 117H Statistics - Honors , or a Mathematics Elective from the list in footnote 6.  Students in the Honors College may also take MATH 296H Mathematics and Statistics Capstone Research Honors .

6 Select two courses from the following: MATH 254 Differential Equations , MATH 255 Discrete Mathematics , or MATH 256 Linear Algebra . 

7 A student electing to take one or more 4-credit Science Elective can reduce the required number of Free Elective credits accordingly to meet the 60-credit minimum for the Associate degree.  The total number of Science/Foreign Language and Free Elective credits must be at least 12.
