Automotive Technology, Certificate

The Certificate in Automotive Technology prepares students for entry into the automotive service field as technicians.  Graduates are qualified for various technical level positions in manufacturing or developmental laboratories, diagnostic centers, specialized repair shops and sales. Graduates are also prepared for self-employment. This certificate is designed for students to complete in one year, if they begin in the fall semester.  Each AUTC course is only offered once per year.  Students must begin in the fall and complete the courses in sequence as listed below.

Instruction in the program includes fuel systems, electrical systems, analysis of engines, suspension systems and wheel alignment.  Students have the opportunity to develop diagnostic and mechanical competency in the automotive field. Courses in this certificate prepare students to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification test.

Graduates are able to:

  • demonstrate the skills necessary to diagnose, service, and repair various automotive systems encountered in skill level C to an acceptable competency according to the NATEF task list
  • demonstrate the safe and proper usage of tools and equipment to an acceptable standard in the automotive industry according to the NATEF task list 
  • demonstrate an understanding of the automotive systems and use a systematic approach to select the proper method to diagnose, repair and test automotive systems 
  • locate service and repair information, using various technical service information offered in the program as required in the automotive repair facility
