Accounting, Associate of Applied Science

The Associate of Applied Science degree in Accounting is a career program that is primarily designed to prepare students to secure entry-level positions directly upon completion. Our graduates are hired as bookkeepers, payroll accountants, accounts receivable specialists and accounts payable specialists.
It is important to note that those students who may wish to pursue a four-year degree in the future and possibly a long-term career in Accounting should consider enrolling in the Business Administration A.S. program versus this career program. Some students in the A.A.S. Accounting program are enrolled with the intent of obtaining employment after graduating with their associate degree, with plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the future. While many of the courses in the A.A.S. Accounting degree will transfer to certain four-year institutions, there is the risk that some upper- level accounting courses may have to be repeated. Students are strongly encouraged to speak to a Faculty Advisor or an Academic Advisor when planning their academic career path.
Through both traditional and creative approaches to teaching, including Service Learning, we cultivate in our students the capacity to learn, willingness to accept constructive criticism, self-discipline, good study and practice habits, communication, self-motivation and esteem, intellectual curiosity, team work ethics, and leadership.
Graduates are able to:
• apply accounting knowledge to make business decisions
• use financial statements to measure the financial performance of a business
• record business transactions resulting in financial statements
This degree is offered through the Business and Public Service Department, whose mission is to provide challenging, career-oriented undergraduate programs to business and public service students, educating them to the level of competency needed for immediate career path entry into the global market.
