Exercise Science-Option in Sports Management, Associate of Science

A degree in Sports Management focuses on the business aspects of sport at many levels.  The Associate Degree prepares the student for entry level positions in the field and at the same time prepares the student for transfer into a four year degree program in Sports Management.

The jobs available to those who earn a degree in the field include:  program directors in community sport programs;  marketing and promotions directors in sport related businesses; administrative positions in a variety of businesses, including health clubs, performance centers and professional, collegiate and privately owned sports teams; academic services for student athletes;  corporate sales directors, jobs in sports finance; sporting goods sales representatives, intramural directors; campus recreation directors; facilities coordinators; athletic directors; compliance directors, athletic business managers; fitness managers; coaches; scouts; umpires; agents and team managers.  

Graduates are able to:

  • explain and evaluate the benefits and risks of exercise and  its influence on overall health and wellness
  • demonstrate an understanding of basic business and accounting principles
  • demonstrate the communication skills necessary to function effectively in the sports management environment         
  • apply acquired business knowledge and skills in outside companies and within the college’s intercollegiate sports programs and fitness center
      

Raritan Valley Community College Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degree programs are designed to comply with the New Jersey Community Colleges General Education Foundation which supports transfer of courses to NJ Public four-year colleges and universities.  Students who intend to transfer to a NJ college or university can further improve the transfer of courses by using the Recommended Transfer Program (RTP) feature in NJTransfer.org.

1Students may substitute  BIOL 101 General Biology I BIOL 102 General Biology II  (MATH 112 Precalculus I  is a corerequisite).  Students are encouraged to check with transfer colleges for required science courses.

2Students planning to transfer to Rutgers University should also take CISY 125 Programming for Business Majors .  

3 Mathematics by official placement test. Students may not take courses below placement level. Students are encouraged to check with transfer college for required Math courses.  For transfer to Rutgers University, MATH 114H Precalculus - Honors , or MATH 112 Precalculus I  & MATH 113 Precalculus II  are required.

4 Select a course from the appropriate category of the General Education  list.  For transfer to Rutgers University, HIST 101 World Civilization I   is recommended to fulfill the Multicultural and International Studies requirement.
 

5Select a course from the following: FITN 123 Prevention & Care of Athletic Injuries ; FITN 146 Exercise Physiology & Body Mechanics ; FITN 201 Kinesiology ; or FITN 203 Exercise Measurement and Prescription .
 
6Mathematics by official placement test. Students may not take courses below placement level.  Students are encouraged to check with transfer college for required courses.  MATH 117H Statistics - Honors  may be substituted.  For transfer to Rutgers MATH 110 Statistics I  and MATH 111 Statistics II    or MATH 117H Statistics - Honors  is required.
