Exercise Science, Associate of Science

The Associate of Science degree in Exercise Science promotes a dynamic, interactive approach to learning exercise science that prepares students for careers in health and fitness-related fields in both public and private industries. At the same time, the program prepares the student for transfer into a four-year degree program, as a junior, in a variety of fitness related majors such as Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy. Students in the program cover all aspects of Exercise Science taught through both laboratory experience and lecture. Students interested in Sports Management or Sports Marketing should consider the AS Exercise Science, Sports Management option.
The fitness industry has a wide variety of jobs available and is projected to be a growth industry throughout the next decade.
Graduates are able to:
- Recognize the subdisciplines within exercise science and understand trends and issues within each.
- Explain and evaluate the benefits and risks of exercise and its influence on health, human performance, and longevity.
- Apply foundational scientific knowledge to analyze movement and physiological responses to exercise.
- Select, administer, and interpret valid and reliable assessments to evaluate health and performance status.
- Develop individualized and population-specific exercise prescriptions that incorporate scientific principles, client goals, health status, and risk-factor considerations.
- Administer and apply preparticipation health screening procedures to maximize client safety and minimize risk.
- Interpret scientific literature, apply research findings, and use data to inform exercise programming, evaluate outcomes, and engage in continuous professional improvement.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical practice relevant to exercise science professions.
Raritan Valley Community College Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degree programs are designed to comply with the New Jersey Community Colleges General Education Foundation which supports transfer of courses to NJ Public four-year colleges and universities. Students who intend to transfer to a NJ college or university can further improve the transfer of courses by using the Recommended Transfer Program (RTP) feature in NJTransfer.org.

1 Students must pass the Red Cross Lifesaving minimum skills test the first week of class for EXSC 148 Lifeguarding . Students do not receive credit for both Lifeguarding and EXSC 129 First Aid & CPR . Students with a current, valid NJ Paramedic or EMT certification can get credit for the class upon presentation of the certification (original document) to the Chair of HSE (certification must not be expired). 2 Students are encouraged to check with transfer college for required Math courses. 3 Select a course from the appropriate category of the General Education list. 4 Choose two of the following courses based on student goals: Exercise Science Electives: EXSC 211 Intro to Personal Training , EXSC 290 Fitness Cooperative Education I , EXSC 124 Sport Law & Risk Management ,EXSC 207 Sports Management , SOCI 233 Sociology of Sport , HLTH 150 Medical Terminology , COMM 101 Speech . Science Electives: CHEM 103 General Chemistry I , CHEM 104 General Chemistry II , BIOL 101 General Biology I , BIOL 102 General Biology II , PHYS 101 General Physics I ,PHYS 102 General Physics II ,HLTH 150 Medical Terminology , Any other course requires Chairperson approval. |
