Biological Sciences, Associate of Science Degree in Science and Mathematics


Biological Sciences is an option of the Associate of Science degree program in Science and Mathematics. Students may choose to pursue one of the three different tracks within the Biological Sciences program 1) Biology, 2) Pre-Medicine and Pre-Pharmacy, or 3) General Science, or 4) Biotechnology.  

The Biology track prepares students for transfer into bachelor’s degree programs at four-year colleges and universities in a variety of programs, including biology, biological sciences, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and ecology and evolution.

The Pre-Medicine and Pre-Pharmacy track prepares students to transfer into bachelor’s degree programs at four-year colleges and universities in a variety of programs that prepare them for graduate programs in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physician assistant, or pharmacy.

The General Science track provides students with an introduction to basic sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics) and is best suited for students who are exploring their scientific interests.

The Biotechnology track prepares students for transfer to a four-year college or university in a variety of programs including biotechnology and prepares students for careers in the biotechnology industry.

Graduates from this program transfer and graduate from leading institutions in New Jersey, such as, Rutgers University, College of New Jersey, Kean University, Rowan University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and other colleges and universities throughout the country.

While students who intend to transfer to a NJ college or university can further investigate how the program tracks transfer to those institutions using the site www.NJTransfer.org, they are also strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor to discuss their plan of study as well as the transfer plan to the institution of their choice.

Graduates are able to:

  • apply knowledge of biological sciences to real-world systems and problems.
  • explain and apply the principles, concepts and terminology of biology.
  • observe, make inferences, classify, organize, and analyze information, and draw evidence- based conclusions consistent with the process of science/scientific method.
  • exhibit proficiency in current laboratory methods, tools, and techniques.

1 Mathematics by official placement. Students in the Biology or Pre-Medicine and Pre-Pharmacy tracks who place directly into MATH 151 Calculus I  should take two Mathematics courses in place of MATH 112 Precalculus I  and MATH 113 Precalculus II  . Choose from the following: MATH 110 Statistics IMATH 111 Statistics II, or MATH 152 Calculus II.  Students in the Biology or Pre-Medicine and Pre-Pharmacy tracks who take MATH 114H Precalculus - Honors should take MATH 151 Calculus I and either MATH 110 Statistics I ,  MATH 111 Statistics II , or MATH 152 Calculus II .  Students in the General Science track who place directly into MATH 151 Calculus I  should take two additional courses in Science or Mathematics, not including BIOL 111 Principles of Biology , CHEM 102 Introduction to Chemistry , or PHYS 112 Concepts of Physics .  Students in the Biotechnology track who place directly into MATH 151 Calculus I   are advised to take PHYS 101 General Physics I  and PHYS 102 General Physics II  in place of place of MATH 112 Precalculus I  and MATH 113 Precalculus II  .Students in the General Science or Biotechnology tracks who take MATH 114H Precalculus - Honors  should take MATH 151 Calculus I  and an additional class in Mathematics or Science, not including BIOL 111 Principles of Biology  , CHEM 102 Introduction to Chemistry  , or PHYS 112 Concepts of Physics  . Students in the Biotechnology track who place directly into MATH 151 Calculus I   are required to take a one-credit Free Elective in place of MATH 112 Precalculus I   and MATH 113 Precalculus II  .  Students in the Biotechnology track who take MATH 114H Precalculus - Honors  are not required to take an additional course.

3 Select a course from the appropriate category of the General Education  list.

4 PHYS 150 Analytical Physics I  and PHYS 151 Analytical Physics II  can be taken in place of PHYS 101 General Physics I  and PHYS 102 General Physics II .  Most pre-medicine and pre-pharmacy programs require only algebra-based Physics (PHYS 101 General Physics I  and PHYS 102 General Physics II  ).  Students are advised to check with their transfer institution.  MATH 151 Calculus I  is a prerequisite for PHYS 150 Analytical Physics I  .

5 Students intending to complete a Doctor of Pharmacy program are advised to check the specific admission requirements of the program.  Most programs require one semester of Statistics (MATH 110 Statistics I ) and two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology (BIOL 124 Human Anatomy & Physiology I  and BIOL 125 Human Anatomy & Physiology II .
