The English as a Second Language (ESL) Certificate of Completion is designed for speakers of languages other than English to obtain college-level proficiency in writing, speaking, understanding, reading, grammar and cultural competency in English.  This Certificate of Completion, which recognizes the work it takes students to achieve native proficiency in a second or additional language, is ideal for any student completing the Raritan Valley ESLS program who is also pursuing an additional Associate Degree or Certificate.  This Certificate of Completion is also ideal for students who have achieved a college degree from a non-English speaking country and wish to learn English at a high level before pursuing additional degrees or certifications at both the graduate and undergraduate level.  Students must place into (or below) ESLS 201 Advanced Reading and Writing for Nonnative Speakers to be eligible for this certificate.  Students who speak other languages but place above ESLS 201are not candidates for this certificate of completion.

Graduates of this Certificate of Completion will be able to:

  • Write college-level essays with citations
  • Read and respond academically to college-level texts
  • Edit their written and oral work to be grammatically accurate
  • Communicate effectively and purposefully in English

NOTE: Students in this program may not be eligible for Financial Aid; students should meet with an Academic Advisor or Financial Aid staff to discuss options for Financial Aid eligibility.
