Environmental Control Technology, Associate of Applied Science

The A.A.S. in Environmental Control Technology prepares students to become service technicians, installers, designers, salespersons, supervisors or contractors of residential as well as commercial equipment in the air conditioning, refrigeration and heating industries.  Graduates are qualified for employment with contracting, research, manufacturing, and maintenance firms or for  self-employment. Students receive instruction in manipulative skills, design, estimating, theory, instrumentation, electricity and control systems. Academic courses in electrical, instrumentation and thermodynamic theories, together with practical applications in the laboratory, provide students with the background necessary to understand how residential and commercial systems and their associated environmental controls operate. Graduates have attained positions as project and middle managers. 

Graduates are able to:

  • troubleshoot problems and utilize proper service techniques to repair residential and commercial heating, cooling and refrigeration systems
  • use engineering manuals and programs for the proper design and selection of environmental control equipment and peripheral components
  • knowingly and effectively work with the latest tools and testers used in this industry for diagnosing and repairing malfunctioning environmental control equipment
  • read wiring diagrams, pipe schematics and mechanical drawings related to air conditioning and refrigeration; perform testing and balancing, and commissioning operations
  • understand operating sequence and logic of building controls and equipment as they work together (integrated systems approach); attain proficiency in Energy & Environmental design
