HIST 240 - Women and Gender in the Premodern World

(3,0) 3 Credits
General Education Course: Humanities-History, Global and Cultural Awareness
Prerequisite(s): Placement into ENGL 111 English Composition I  with ENGL 070 English Composition I Workshop  , or higher.
Students will learn about the experiences and perceptions of women from across economic, social, political, religious, and cultural contexts who lived between 3000 BCE to 1450 CE. Students will gain analytical skills through utilizing an intersectional approach to women’s history. They will examine how religious, political, and social identities were shaped by customs, beliefs, power structures, and laws. Topics include family life, women’s work, education, crime, witchcraft, religious movements, unpaid labor, and women’s contributions to scholarship. By studying both individual women’s lives and broader historical contexts, students will gain insight into premodern history and the historical construction of gender, as well as its influence on modern realities.
