INTD 245 - Introduction to Special Education: Elementary and Secondary Years(3,0) 3 Credits Prerequisite/Corequisite: ENGL 111 - English Composition I . This course examines the causes, the teacher’s role in the identification process, curricular approaches, and appropriate legislation with regard to special education issues in grades K-12. Various types of exceptionalities, including mental retardation, learning disabilities, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, communication disorders, hearing and visual impairments, physical disabilities and giftedness, and transitions into adulthood are introduced. The changing field of special education and the impact on children, families, educators, and the community are also explored. Additionally, the course encompasses aspects of biology, physiology, genetics, and social development as related to exceptionality. Students who earn credit for INTD 245 will not be given credit for INTD 240.
