DENT 102 - Fundamentals of the Dental Profession

Prerequisite(s): ENGL 111 English Composition I  , PSYC 103 Introduction to Psychology  , BIOL 124 Human Anatomy & Physiology I  .
Corequisite(s): DENT 100 Clinical Applications of Dental Materials  , DENT 101 Anatomy of Orofacial Structures  , DENT 103 Medical Emergencies in Dentistry  .
Fundamentals of the Dental Professions provides an overview to dentistry including the identification and evolution of dental team members, dental specialties, code of ethics, professional associations and role of the dental assistant. Through a combination of lecture and laboratory sessions, a full array of dental procedures, protocols, role of the dental professional and scope of practice in general and specialty practices will be presented. The New Jersey State Dental Practice Act and ethical considerations for the dental auxiliary are also defined and emphasized. As vital members of the dental health team, the dental assistant participates in a wide range of clinical procedures requiring specific knowledge and clinical skill. The course provides a strong foundation for the understanding of principles and performance of basic and advanced clinical skills that must be mastered to achieve competency as a practicing dental assistant.
