SPAN 223 - Spanish American Civilization (3,0) 3 Credits
General Education Course: Humanities-Foreign Language, Global and Cultural Awareness Prerequisite(s): SPAN 202 - Intermediate Spanish II or appropriate placement test score. Readings and discussion, in Spanish, of the civilization of Spanish American countries. The course will look at pre-Columbian civilizations, the arrival of the Spanish, the colonial period, the Wars of Independence, and the modern period. In discussing the modern period, a representative country from each of the following regions will be examined in some detail: Rio de la Plata, Los Andes, Mexico y Centroamerica, y Las Antillas.
